Gourmet Holiday gifts that delight don't need to be expensive! Here are some ideas for the foodies on your list - all come in around $20 US.
Gourmet Gifts Under $20.00
- Moonbrine pickles are artisanal and delicious. Two bottles for $12.00 and they make cool T shirts, too. What do you get when you cross an ex-teacher (third grade) with lower East-side NYC pickle history? Fabulous pickles. Giddy up and pickle down.
- Saffron in a glass bottle - $9.95 (LaTienda.com) Hand-made terra cotta Sangria Pitcher – would look great with a bunch of daisies too. $18.95 (also at LaTienda.com)
- Fun cocktail napkins including retro sayings and photos from someone's 1965 scrapbook can be purchased for as little as $4.95 at Instantliving. Why not get your favorite tippler a bundle of fun ones, or couple them with cocktail picks or a premium bottle of vodka?
- Meyer Lemon Olive Oil from Pasolivo. You may remember my love affair with this fabulous oil, read here. This family owned operation takes fine Tuscan olive varieties (7 of them!) and blends them with Meyer Lemon. It's divine. They also make superb Tangerine and Lime oils, too. Try sprinkling a bit on some pita bread, toss on some za'atar spices for a real treat. A great gift for your, or your friend's, kitchen. $16.00
- I told you about this fabulous Artisanal Hickory Smoked Ham but did you know that Allan Benton's also makes hickory smoked bacon? At $4.50/lb for minimum 4lb order that's only $18.00. The strong hickory flavor is beloved by chefs all over New York city and at least a few here in Boston, why not see what the fuss is about?
- One of our favorite cheese shops in the Boston/Cambridge area is Formaggio Kitchen. How about a jar of Rose Petal Jam for only $9.95?
- If superb hand-crafted confiture are what you seek in the Boston area, try Chef Barbara Lynch's new PLUM Produce shop. Marcona almond butter, hot pepper jelly, quince paste are just a few of the offerings. Prices from $6 - $16 dollars, these make perfect hostess gifts.
- Wrap a hand-made herb powder in tissue and you've got a truly unique stocking stuffer that will dazzle any cook on your list. Herbes de Provence blend that is transporting ($12.00) Citrus-ginger, fennel, rosemary and more ($8.00). We've touched on compound butters before, these would be delicious additions.
- How about a cool T-shirt supporting a unique project? Cheese By Hand has been documenting artisanal and farmstead cheese makers across the country. They have cool T's that help support their work. (My favorite, for the record is the Cow, Sheep and Goat each on its own star.) Read this blog post and check the link to a fun video clip on these guys. And by all means, check out their project.
- We explored cooking en Papillote and learned you can use parchment paper, or foil. Did you know you can also use thin sheets of cedar paper? Check out Great Lakes Grilling Company and buy some for less than $20.00.
